Philadelphia Marathon Weekend

Philadelphia Marathon Weekend is a late-November running weekend in Philadelphia, with the full marathon on the third Sunday of the month and the shorter races on Saturday. The main race is the AACR Philadelphia Marathon, a certified 42.195 km marathon and one of the larger marathons in the United States, with more than 10,000 marathon finishers and more than 30,000 people entering the weekend’s seven events. The weekend also includes the Dietz & Watson Philadelphia Half Marathon, the Rothman Orthopaedic 8K, and several two-day challenges for runners who want to stack more than one race. The race grew out of earlier Philadelphia-area marathons, including suburban versions and races under different names, before the modern city-run Philadelphia Marathon was set up with just over 1,500 runners. The Rothman 8K began as a smaller add-on backed by local runners and Dr. Peter Sharkey of the Rothman Institute, and it now draws about 3,000 runners. The half marathon later joined the program, and the weekend split into its current Saturday-and-Sunday format. More than 60,000 spectators line the event, while over 3,000 volunteers from schools, colleges, universities, and local groups run cheer zones, replenishment stations, and course support.

SRPS Charity Team: Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run

The Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run is a 10-mile road race held on the first Sunday in May, crossing Philadelphia’s main north-south artery. It begins at the athletic fields near Central High School in Logan and concludes at the Navy Yard in South Philadelphia. With approximately 40,000 participants and around 35,000 finishers, it stands as the largest 10-mile race in the United States. Entry is managed through a lottery system. The event, established in 1980, now sees more women than men among its finishers. The course proceeds south along Broad Street, passing landmarks such as Temple University, Roman Catholic High School for Boys, City Hall, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Kimmel Center. Earlier races routed through City Hall’s courtyard, whereas current participants circle the building. The finish line’s location has evolved; it once incorporated a lap within JFK Stadium, then relocated to FDR Park post-demolition, and eventually settled at the Navy Yard. All finishers receive a medal, and participating charities include the American Cancer Society, the American Association for Cancer Research, Fairmount Park Conservancy, Students Run Philly Style, and Back On My Feet.

About cycling & running in Philadelphia

Philadelphia Training Notes

Running: Locals run the Schuylkill River Trail, Kelly Drive, Forbidden Drive, Boxer’s Trail, Pennypack trails, and the Benjamin Franklin Bridge pedestrian walkway. The usual river loop gives you 5 miles without intersections when it's open. m. The Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run, Philadelphia Distance Run, Philly Run Fest, Rocky Run, Penn Relays, and Philadelphia Marathon Weekend keep the calendar honest.

Cycling: Locals ride the Circuit Trails, Kelly Drive, MLK Jr. Drive, the Schuylkill River Trail, and the East Falls Loop for steady base miles. The Schuylkill River Trail runs 30 miles to Parker Ford and goes through Valley Forge National Historical Park. Bicycle Club of Philadelphia runs free group recreational rides, and Central Bucks Bicycle Club keeps evening and weekend road and mountain rides going throughout the year. Guy’s Racing Club brings the Neshaminy Classic and Whirlybird ‘Cross. Manayunk gives you Main Street, Leverington Avenue, Umbria Street, Shawmont Avenue, and Port Royal Avenue when you want climbs, cobbles, and punchy intervals.

Season: June, July, and August give the city its highest sunshine share, so locals stack early Z2, evening club runs, and short river-path intervals before the heat sits in. Summer feels hot and muggy, and the Saturday Philly Runners start moves to 8 a.m. from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Spring and fall feel like the cleanest blocks for marathon work, gran fondo prep, cyclocross openers, and longer Wissahickon miles. Winter stays moderately cold, and runners and riders keep going when light snow is all that shows up, while bigger storms push more work onto cleared paths and shorter loops.
