Alabama Law Enforcement Torch Run

The Alabama Law Enforcement Torch Run is a 5K and 1-mile Fun Run held at Wrights Mill Road Elementary in Auburn. The Fun Run begins before the 5K in the morning. This event benefits Special Olympics Alabama, with race day focused on generating funds and awareness for athletes with intellectual disabilities, rather than solely on competitive times. Law enforcement officers define the event: participants include officers from across Lee County, the Auburn Police Department, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, and the Opelika Police Department. A key tradition involves carrying the Flame of Hope. The funds raised enable Special Olympics Alabama to provide ongoing sports training and competition. The 5K includes awards for the top three male and female finishers, while the Fun Run offers a relaxed option for families and casual runners.

Gravel Roll - Opelika Okey Dokey

Opelika Okey Dokey is the Opelika event in Gravel Roll, a four-event gravel cycling series across the Southeast. The race is scheduled for May and follows a Gran Fondo format: all participants ride the course, but only specific segments are timed for results. For Opelika, the intermediate route covers 68 miles with three timed segments. Across the series, courses feature one to four timed sections, typically comprising 30 to 50 percent of the total distance. This structure allows riders to compete intensely during the marked sections and then regroup with others afterward. Final standings are determined by each rider's cumulative time on these timed segments, accommodating serious racers, club riders, and groups with varying skill levels. Gravel Roll supports this with well-supplied aid stations, a community emphasis, and the motto “Super Serious Good Times.”

Sportsplex Triathlon for Kids

Sportsplex Tri for Kids is a youth triathlon held at the Opelika Sportsplex and Aquatics Center in Opelika, Alabama. It is designed for children, with the main Kids Triathlon catering to ages 5 to 15, and the Small Fry Tri offering a shorter event for ages 2 to 5. The competitive Kids Triathlon is USAT sanctioned, featuring divisions for ages 5-8, 9-11, and 12-15. Athletes compete in the age group corresponding to their age at the end of the race year. The event takes place at the Sportsplex and its aquatics facilities, providing a controlled environment for young athletes to attempt the swim-bike-run format. Kids Triathlon participants require a USAT membership, whereas Small Fry racers do not. The race was initiated by Nicole Carter, Sarah Herren, and Kimberly Myers, and it received an Alabama Recreation and Parks Association award in its inaugural season. Nicole Carter directed the triathlon for numerous seasons before a new leadership team continued the event.
