Running: Locals build a lot of base miles on the MKT Trail because it stretches through town and feels right for long Z2 days. m. Tuesday and Thursday launch. m. m. m. Sunday. The Sunday route covers 45 km and gains 158 m. Heart of America Marathon & Relay is the anchor event, with Go Girl Run and Flat Branch Ultra close behind.
Cycling: Locals ride the MKT Trail, Hinkson Creek Trail, Bear Creek Trail, Scott Boulevard Trail, and Hominy Creek Trail when they want easygoing miles without overthinking it. Columbia Bicycle Club keeps the scene social and bike-friendly. The Downtown to Coopers Landing ride uses the MKT and Katy trails, and the Columbia-Rocheport 30M ride gives folks a tidy bigger effort. The Columbia-Rocheport 30M ride covers 2 miles and packs about 700 feet of climbing each way, so factor in the hills. Rock Bridge Memorial State Park brings Springbrook, Deer Run, and Sinkhole for singletrack, while Boone County gravel keeps gran fondo legs honest.
Season: Spring gives Columbia its best training window, even when the latter half of spring brings frequent rain and severe weather chances. Locals use those months for intervals, long runs, gravel, and the kind of base miles that make summer work. Columbia hits 32°C or hotter on about 35 days each year, so early starts matter. 3 cm per season. Runners grab headlamps for dark group runs, and riders shift toward trail laps, easier Z2, or whatever pavement and gravel stay clear.
