BMW Dallas Marathon

The BMW Dallas Marathon begins and ends at Dallas City Hall. The full marathon route circles White Rock Lake before returning downtown. This December road race weekend in Dallas, Texas, centers on the marathon but also includes a half marathon, 5K, 10K, a two-person half-marathon relay, a five-person marathon relay, and a 50K ultramarathon. The marathon is Texas' oldest, originating from the White Rock Marathon first organized by Talmage Morrison of the Cross Country Club of Dallas. Finish times can qualify runners for the Boston Marathon, attracting participants aiming for standards alongside those pursuing more accessible goals in the shorter races and relays. White Rock Lake has been integral to the race since its inception. The initial course circled the lake twice, subsequent versions utilized multiple loops on the east side, and the current marathon course goes around the lake once. The half marathon bypasses the lake loop, while the 50K incorporates an out-and-back segment on Santa Fe. The inaugural race had 82 starters and 61 finishers, a modest number compared to recent race weekends that attract over 30,000 participants across all events. The event also maintains a long-standing charity affiliation with Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, having raised over $3.8 million since it became the primary beneficiary. While BMW now sponsors the event, the historical White Rock identity highlights the lake's significance to the course.

Texas Double

The Texas Double is a multi-day marathon and half marathon series held at Bachman Lake in Dallas, on park grounds near Love Field. Participants can select a half or a full marathon on each race day, with a structure designed for multiple races rather than a single event. These races are chip timed, open to all, and have no cutoff times, making them suitable for walkers, back-of-the-pack runners, and individuals accumulating races for marathon clubs. Running the Distance, LLC organizes the series, adhering to the guidelines set by the 50 State Marathon Club and Marathon Maniacs. The course consists of loops around Bachman Lake: the marathon covers 8 loops, and the half marathon uses 4 loops with a brief out-and-back section at the beginning. The terrain is predominantly fast and flat, featuring two minor inclines at the dam and near the start/finish line. The course has a history of USATF certification, though ongoing construction has impacted this; recertification is planned once the work concludes. All finishers are listed in the results and receive a medal for each race completed. An additional medal is available for completing the entire series, with one shirt provided for the series. Twenty percent of the proceeds benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and the event fosters a close-knit volunteer and aid station culture that organizers refer to as a "running family."

Texas Quad

The Texas Quad is a race series held in late November at Bachman Lake in Dallas, offering half marathons and marathons over four days. Participants may run a single race or multiple days, which is beneficial for those pursuing goals with the 50 State Marathon Club or Marathon Maniacs. The races are open to the public on park grounds, are chip timed, USATF sanctioned, and have no cutoff times. The course is flat for a marathon, featuring two minor inclines near the dam and the start/finish area. The full marathon consists of eight loops, and the half marathon is four loops with a brief out-and-back section at the start. Construction has impacted course certification; the organizer plans to recertify the course once the work is finished. Each finisher receives a medal per race completed, in addition to a series finisher medal. A single shirt is provided for the entire series. The event donates 20% of its proceeds to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

About cycling & running in Dallas

Dallas Training Notes

Running: The Katy Trail runs 10 miles with skyline views and plenty of room to settle into Z2. The trail runs 5 miles from American Airlines Center to SMU, and locals use it for social miles when it is not packed. Santa Fe Trail connects White Rock Lake to Deep Ellum, and runners use it to add distance without overthinking the route. Dallas Running Club has nearly 2,000 members and a Wednesday Meet Up Social Run with 1 Mi, 5K, and 10K options. BMW Dallas Marathon is the big anchor event downtown, while Hot Trot Half Marathon and the 28th Annual Katy 5K keep the calendar busy.

Cycling: Trinity River Levees are the go-to for gravel, and locals can follow more than 40 miles of track either on top of the levees or down inside them. White Rock Lake is still the daily spin, with the loop running 9 to 11 miles depending on the line. Santa Fe Trail is the clean route from Downtown toward White Rock and the East Dallas rides. DFW Gravel Grinders and Trinity Gravel Grinders keep the dirt crowd moving, while Critical Mass Dallas rolls on the last Friday of every month. Bike the Bluebonnets gives riders an anchor event, and Dallas Dirty Thirty gives the legs a harder target. Lakewood gives small hills, while bridges and levees handle most of the climbing.

Season: March through May gives Dallas runners and cyclists the best training window, with spring weather that makes intervals and long Z2 days feel normal. September through November gives the second good block, and fall is the cleanest time to stack base miles before BMW Dallas Marathon season. Summer turns very hot and humid, with highs regularly over 32°C and heat indices past 40°C, so locals go early, go short, or keep it easy. Winter stays mostly mild around 13°C daytime highs in January, but cold spells can drop below freezing and make group rides, trail runs, and cyclocross-style mud days feel different fast.
