Ridge to River is a 4-mile and 10-mile trail race held in Barboursville Park, Barboursville, West Virginia. It begins and ends near Shelter 5. The race commences at 8am and marks its 17th year. Both distances share the initial section: the 4-mile race follows the first four miles of the 10-mile route. The opening eight-tenths of a mile ascends before participants enter dense woods and single-track trail. The 10-mile course offers an extended exploration of the park, featuring approximately 2.5 miles alongside the Guyandotte River and a concluding 3.5 miles that are largely flat, save for a single steep incline. The final eight-tenths of a mile descends to the finish. The longer race includes three aid stations, all providing water; the middle station also offers Huma gels. The 4-mile race has no hydration stop. Brooks typically provides demo shoes and prizes, and participants receive a light breakfast post-race.
The State Games of West Virginia 5K Trail Run/Walk and 11K Trail Run in Huntington begin at Heritage Farm’s covered bridge in the afternoon. These events are part of the State Games of West Virginia. A 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk is available for families and younger children. The 5K and 11K are trail races, and the mile is a farm walk or run on the Heritage Farm grounds. The 5K route ascends Grindstone Trail to the summit before descending Corn Husker Trail, finishing near the covered bridge. The 11K offers a longer course for experienced trail runners. Medals are awarded to the top overall male and female finishers and to age-group winners in the 5K and 11K. The mile event includes children’s divisions and adult awards. Medal recipients are eligible to represent West Virginia at the State Games of America, a national competition for state-games medalists.
Running: Huntington runners really show up around Harris RiverFront Park, downtown, and Marshall’s campus when River City 5 Miler/5k rolls out. The route covers 04 km with a gain of +7 m. Meeks Mountain Trails, Grindstone Trail, and Corn Husker Trail keep trail runners honest. The Guyandotte River gives fast, flat trail work after deep woods and singletrack. Marshall University Cross-Country sits in the local mix. The Marshall University Marathon, River City 5 Miler/5k, and State Games trail races anchor the calendar.
Cycling: ACE (Ashland Cycling Enthusiasts) gives Ashland riders the playbook, and the club has been around since January 2003. Bear Creek gets the love because locals call it TDF quality roads. One climb hits 4 km with 1,796 m elevation. Another climb runs 5 km with 863 m elevation. The Six Hills route, Big Nebo, Short Nebo, Greasy Ridge, Pleasant Ridge, Taylor Ridge, and Leatherwood Road hold the climbing. The SMBT route and Wayne-Cabell Century carry the long-day energy.
Season: Fall is the best stretch for both running and riding, with cooler air and enough daylight for Z2, intervals, and long base miles. Summer keeps things lively, and the Ultraviolet Mushroom Hunt lands on July 1 with a night hike on Meeks Mountain Trails using UV flashlights. Cyclists still chase early starts on Bear Creek, Kinnickinick creek, and Symmes Creek before the day gets heavy. Runners lean into River City speed, Barboursville Park hill work, and Meeks Mountain singletrack. Winter shrinks the calendar feel, but the same loops still work when locals keep the pace steady.
