Onslow Community Outreach-Moore Buick GMC Turkey Trot

The Onslow Community Outreach-Moore Buick GMC Turkey Trot takes place on Thanksgiving morning at Jacksonville Commons, with the start and finish near 100 Recreation Lane in Jacksonville, North Carolina. Participants can select the 5Kish race, the shorter Giblet 1-Miler, or a virtual 5K. The event is designed for families and regular runners alike. The 1-miler begins first, followed by Ainsley’s Angels and then the 5K. Walkers, strollers, and pets are asked to begin from the rear of the 5K corral. The race benefits Onslow Christmas Cheer, providing the holiday run with a local charity mission. The Extra Servings Challenge allows participants to run both the 1-miler and the 5Kish race, earning an additional challenge medal alongside their two race medals. All 5K and 1-mile finishers receive a medal, with distinct designs for each distance. Awards are presented to the top overall male and female finishers, as well as the first-place winners in each 5K age group from youth categories up to 70 and over. Fleet Feet gift certificates will be awarded to the fastest runners.

Running with the Law 5K/10K - Sunset Pursuit

The Running with the Law 5K/10K - Sunset Pursuit takes place on a Tuesday evening at sunset, starting from Riverwalk Park in Jacksonville, North Carolina. The event features a 5K walk/run, a 10K walk/run, and a one-mile fun run. The 5K and 10K events are open to children aged seven and up, as well as adults of all ages. This race is connected to National Night Out, meaning local law enforcement officers participate in the race itself rather than observing from the sidelines. The course follows downtown streets and the riverfront, providing participants with a view of both the city and the water as evening approaches. Runners and walkers have the option to race against a patrol car, pause for a sunset photograph with officers, or choose the shorter one-mile route. All funds raised benefit the NC Special Olympics, supporting local athletes in their training and competition efforts. Although this is only the second year for this Tuesday night event, organizers are aiming to surpass the previous year's registration numbers.

About cycling & running in Jacksonville

Jacksonville Base Miles

Running: Locals get their base miles around the old Front Gate routes, Camp Johnson Scenic Loop, Riverwalk Crossing Park, and the New River side of town. The typical loop covers 20 km with +56 m gain. The brief names no formal run club, so locals lean on race mornings and steady meetups around familiar loops. Running with the Law 5K/10K - Sunset Pursuit puts people on riverfront and city streets at sunset, while Beat the Bridge 10k/5k, Stars & Strides 5k, and YMCA Chevy Shuffle 5k carry the anchor-event feel.

Cycling: The route runs 2 miles from Camp LeJeune to Marine Boulevard. The Rails to Trails Greenway gives the city a bigger goal, with a planned 172-mile network linking toward Riverwalk Crossing Park. Richlands Loop Bicycle Route gives road riders a 50-mile rural spin, and its shorter 20-mile option sits south of Gregory Crossroads. The park has 2 miles of singletrack-style bike and walking trails. 9%.

Season: Spring and fall feel like the cleanest training blocks here, especially for Richlands Loop and longer base miles. Summer in Onslow County gets extremely hot and humid, so locals move runs early, keep intervals honest, and treat long rides like bottle math. Winter weather in Onslow County turns unpredictable, but the flat coastal layout keeps Z2 work possible when the day opens up. Riverwalk Crossing Park, the Rail-to-Trails path, and Big Branch Bike Park stay useful when schedules shift, and race mornings like White Elephant 5k FUN RUN or the Turkey Trot keep people moving.
