About cycling & running in Lawrence

Lawrence Training Notes

Running: Locals run Lawrence like a college town with trails tucked everywhere. South Park, Old West Lawrence, East Lawrence, and the University of Kansas campus handle easy miles, while Mount Oread gives short hill work without leaving town. The Lawrence Loop Trail has 15 miles complete and is planned as a 22-mile circuit, so locals use pieces of it for steady Z2. Lawrence River Trails give about 6.5 miles one way on the north bank in North Lawrence. runLawrence, Fleet Feet Lawrence, Quail Run Marathon Club, and Lawrence Area Runners keep the group-run scene moving. Kansas Half Marathon & 5K, KU Vets Day 5K, and runLawrence Thanksgiving Day 5K are anchor races.

Cycling: Locals ride out fast once the city thins into gravel roads and rolling farmland. Chicken Creek Gravel Route gives riders 42 miles with 70% gravel, 30% pavement, and 2,080 feet of gain, so it works for base miles or a hard gran fondo-style day. The route rolls around Lone Star Lake and crosses the locally fabled Chicken Creek Arch Bridge. Lawrence Bicycle Club gives the road and group-ride crowd a home base. Lizard Under the Skillet is the anchor cycling event. Mount Oread brings the in-town punch, while the harder climbing lives west around Clinton Lake and south on the steep pitches of fresh or loose gravel.

Season: Spring and fall are the best months because runners and riders can stack mileage without fighting the worst heat. Summer keeps the roads, levee, Lawrence Loop Trail, and Clinton State Park trails busy, but August can peak up to 110 degrees Fahrenheit, so locals go early and keep intervals honest. Clinton Lake, Lawrence River Trails, and Haskell-Baker Wetlands stay useful when shade and softer footing matter. Winter is cold and dry, and the city shifts toward shorter loops, KU Track sessions, crushed gravel, and steady Z2. Cyclocross legs still like the chill, while singletrack at Clinton State Park depends on conditions.
