Mankato Marathon

The Mankato Marathon takes place over a mid-October weekend in Mankato, Minnesota, offering a full marathon, half marathon, four-person marathon relay, 10K, 5K, and children's runs. Established in 2010, the event attracts close to 5,000 runners throughout the weekend, positioning it as a significant sports event in southwest Minnesota. The primary races begin near Minnesota State University, Mankato, with the weekend commencing with a sports and health expo at Myers Field House. The USATF-certified marathon course is eligible as a Boston Marathon qualifier, and pacers are available for both the full and half marathon distances. The marathon route incorporates city streets, trails, riverside paths, and two rural roads, deviating from a simple out-and-back design. It winds through Mankato neighborhoods, utilizes the Red Jacket Trail, encircles Mount Kato, passes by Sibley Park and the Hubbard House, and concludes on Front Street near the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center. While the region features steep inclines, the course navigates around the most challenging sections with moderate ascents and descents. Visit Mankato owns and operates the race, with local nonprofits involved in fundraising, and participants finish at a post-race gathering featuring live music, food, and beverages.

Fairmont Triathlon (Youth, Sprint) and Run for the Bacon 5K

The Fairmont Sprint Triathlon and Run for the Bacon 5K are held at Gomsrud Park in Fairmont, Minnesota, with the Marty’s Youth Triathlon for children located at Fairmont Aquatic Park. The main race weekend combines a sprint-distance triathlon and a bacon-themed 5K, connected to Fairmont’s identity as Bacon Capital USA. This is a local, accessible event: adults can compete in the sprint solo or as a 2- or 3-person relay, while children ages 5 to 15 have their own short triathlon distances at the pool and park. The sprint triathlon begins with a quarter-mile open-water swim, followed by a 20K bike ride on flat county roads, and concludes with a 5K run through residential streets. The youth races adjust distances by age group: 5- to 8-year-olds swim 25 meters, bike 1 mile, and run a quarter mile; 9- to 11-year-olds maintain the same swim but bike 1.8 miles and run a half mile; 12- to 15-year-olds swim 50 meters, bike 3.5 miles, and run 1 mile. Younger children are permitted to use flotation devices in the pool, making the event more accommodating for new triathletes. The bacon theme defines the 5K, with runners encouraged to wear bacon-themed costumes. Sprint awards are given to the top overall male and female finishers and the top competitors in each age group, while all youth triathlon participants receive a ribbon and shirt.

About cycling & running in Mankato

Mankato Training Notes

Running: Mankato runners get a real river-town mix. Locals use river loop 1, river loop 2, skyline 2x, Mankato 3-mile, and red jacket weasel park when they want simple miles without overthinking it. The route runs 3 km and climbs 56 m, so it's a tidy bite of work. River Valley Running keeps people honest with a monthly group fun run, and RVR Race Team meets Wednesdays at 6 PM with Sunday 7 AM long runs in spring and fall blocks. Mankato Marathon is the October anchor, with Bookin' on Belgrade Nearly 5K and Patrick Freeberg Memorial Scholarship 5K in the local mix.

Cycling: Mankato riders have plenty to chew on. Kato Cycle Club has been around since 1936, and Nicollet Bike and Ski is the easy hub for Tuesday rides, gravel, fat bike nights, and the first-Friday 10 mile social ride around Mankato. Locals ride Red Jacket Trail, Minneopa Loop, Mankato Loop, Red Jacket Loop, Good Thunder Loop, Kiwanis Mountain Bike Trails, and Mount Kato. Red Jacket Trail runs 7 miles and takes riders south for gravel grinding, climbs and descents. Mount Kato and Lime Valley are where you bring your climbing gears, and the downhills are lots of fun. River Valley 100 and Kato Bike Fall Fest are the anchor rides.

Season: Spring and fall are the sweet spots here. April and May work well for base miles and gravel, while September and October feel made for marathon prep, cyclocross legs, and long Z2 rides. Summer brings warm days, humid spells, cooler pushes from Canada, and wet months from June to August, so locals time intervals around showers and thunderstorm activity. Winter changes the whole routine. Runners deal with cold wind and snow cover most years, while riders move toward lights, fat bikes, mountain bike rides, and whatever singletrack or pavement is rideable.
