Capital City Marathon

The Capital City Marathon takes place over a weekend in May in Olympia, Washington. It features a full marathon, a half marathon, a five-mile race, and a free kids run. The marathon is a Boston Marathon qualifier. The course winds through rolling hills, differing from a flat city loop. It accommodates various age groups: the marathon is for runners aged 16 and older, the half marathon for those 14 and older, and the kids run for children 14 and under. The Capital City Marathon Association, a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization dedicated to running in the South Sound community, plans and operates the race. Volunteers manage essential tasks such as course safety, packet pickup, registration, and gear handling. The event attracts experienced marathoners, first-time participants, and shorter-distance runners, bringing them together afterward for refreshments, music, massage, and merchandise. Its established history is also a key element: the race is celebrating its 45th year, with retro-themed shirts referencing the inaugural event in the early 1980s.

Olympia Lakefair Races - Half Marathon, 8K & 3K

The Olympia Lakefair Races begin and end next to Heritage Park on 5th Avenue in Olympia, Washington. Capitol Lake is central to the shorter courses. The series aligns with the Lakefair festival and features three distances: the Jerry Miller Half Marathon, an 8K, and a 3K. The 3K offers free entry for children 14 and under, maintaining a family focus, while the 8K and half marathon provide faster or longer choices for adult runners on the same day. The 3K and 8K circuits encircle Capitol Lake. The 8K extends to Tumwater Historical Park before looping back to Olympia. The half marathon briefly crosses downtown before utilizing the Woodland Trail and Chehalis Western Trail bike paths, rural streets, a short trail segment, Squaxin Park, and East Bay Drive, concluding at Heritage Park. The shorter races are level and quick, whereas the half marathon includes narrow paved trails and tree-lined sections. Post-race, awards are presented for age groups up to 90, along with raffle awards. Lakefair festival events, including food and beer vendors, take place around Heritage Park.

About cycling & running in Olympia

Olympia Base Miles And Gravel

Running: Locals run Capitol Lake when they want flat miles, easy chatter, and a clean rhythm from Marathon Park. Club Oly Road Runners meets by the benches for 3 to 5 miles, then uses Thursdays for tempo runs and hill repeats. Olympia Workouts keeps sprint drills and repeats at Olympia High School Track. Oly Trail Runners meets at Priest Point Park when the legs want dirt. Capitol Forest sits southwest of town with Bob Bammert Grove, Fuzzy Top, and long singletrack. Capital City Marathon is the spring anchor, and Olympia Lakefair Races keep the lake loop honest.

Cycling: Locals ride a real mix here, from Chehalis Western Trail spins to Capitol Forest gravel days. Great Rides Olympia, Cascadia Super Gravel, and Evergreen Gravel Racing give the bike scene its backbone. One route runs 9 km with 503 m of elevation on nice medium traffic roads. Another route runs 5 km with 353 m when you want steadier base miles. 2 km. Capitol Forest holds the climbing toward Capitol Peak, McKenny, and Mima.

Season: Spring puts runners on race prep for Capital City Marathon and Olympia Lakefair Races. Summer gives both sports the best training rhythm, with long daylight, dry trail time, and easy Z2 after work. Oly Summer X-C Training meets weekdays at 9:00 am at Olympia High School track from June to August. Club Oly keeps lake miles and focused work moving through the week. Winter changes the gear, not the habit. Polar Bear Athletics Company trains from November to February, while riders lean on Chehalis Western Trail, Yelm-Tenino Trail, and gravel when Capitol Forest feels right.
